PHENOMENA-BASED LEARNING AND TEACHING (PhBL)

Laerskool Eversdal se Gr. 4-7-leerders het besluit om ons leerders meer bewus te maak van die fenomeen, Plastiek in die oseane. As ‘n mens gaan lees oor wat ‘n fenomeen is, behels dit dat die fenomeen (verskynsel) geïdentifiseer word en dat daar dan uitkomste gekoppel word om te verseker dat leerders iets uit die verskynsel leer.

The implementation of Phenomena-based teaching and learning took place in the second term. An intensive, practical, evening workshop was held for the Intersen Phase and selected other staff members, where the phenomenon, Plastic in the ocean, was discussed. A few identified subjects (Maths, Home Language, History/Geography, NST/Technology and Art) were included

PhBL is a multidisciplinary, constructivist form of learning or pedagogy where students study a topic or concept in a holistic approach instead of in a subject-based approach.

The goal of phenomenon-based learning is to prepare learners to handle real-world problems in an active learning environment using various discovery methods.

Learners had the opportunity to discuss the phenomenon and reflect on the impact on the world’s oceans. Work done in the different subjects were displayed in the classes and passages of the school.

Uitkomste wat bereik is, het o.a. daartoe gelei dat van die Gr. 6-leerders, saam met die opvoeder verantwoordelik vir herwinning, gaan ondersoek instel het oor die gebruik van plastiek binne die skoolomgewing. Hulle het daarna met voorstelle vorendag gekom hoe om die skoolomgewing meer plastiekvry te maak, om sodoende te wys dat hulle die Evers wil aanmoedig om nie net plastiek in die oseane te verminder nie, maar ook binne die skoolomgewing.

We ended our journey with an art display. The corridors and stairs, classroom doors and windows were decorated with our poms, slogans and social media posts. Recycling has never before been this much fun!
